Back at the Sydney meetup, in between bubbles, laughs and an amazing night with some of the fabulous LB ladies, I had some quiet time where I was privileged enough to catch up with the beautiful Angela, and her daughter Amelia.
When Angela walked into the Ovolo with Amelia in toe - not feeling particularly well from school, we ditched the cafe idea and headed back to the hotel room to catch up over coffee (freeze-dried - nothing too fancy here) but the conversation was well worth the lack of caffeine. The one takeaway from that morning was, if there is anybody that resonates beauty inside and out - it is this individual. Thank you Angela for our catch up - it was so lovely to meet you!
Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
My original home town was London & now I’m lucky enough to call Sydney home. I have lived in Australia permanently for 22 years. I have a deep attachment & connection to both countries & regularly visit the the UK.
What was your dream job growing up and is this what your doing now?
I don’t really recall a dream job but what I do remember is that I wanted to work. I started working at 13 years in the weekend fashion street markets that were very popular in London in the 80’s. I’ve basically always worked ever since then. My mum always worked & she continually would tell me the importance of building my own career & having financial independence. I suppose because of her I never thought any other way.. Fast forward.. I now really have my dream job. I’m the Human Resources Director for an Asia Pacific clinical research organisation. This job has given me the opportunity to work with smart, caring people from across Asia Pacific with an ultimate purpose to improve patients lives. This has extra special meaning to me & will make sense when you read my next answer.
What is one of your most defining moments in life?
7 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a scary time, my youngest child (I have 3 kids) was 3 years old at the time I had some pretty dark thoughts that I may not be around to watch them grow up. Lightness however did follow the dark. Early detection via a breast screen meant the cancer was found incredibly early. After having both my breasts removed I sat in front of my surgeon & she told me I had been surgically cured without need for any further treatment. She told me to go live my life to the full!! I cannot explain in words how that felt. I was walking on sunshine with steroids & felt I had won the lotto of life. So today I live with the attitude that I’m grateful even for my problems. My husband & kids joke I’m the most positive person on earth & I am happy with that even if it is a bit annoying!
What are three of your favourite things to do?
Singing in the car with my kids (doesn’t happen so much now as they are growing up but it was special). Early Sunday morning walk at Manly Beach. Being with my special people who make me laugh so much that my face aches & tears roll down my face.
Your favourite aspect of being in the Leina Broughton Conversations Group?
The LB Group is a kind supportive diverse group of women. The conversations are not just about the dresses but help women rise up & provide a safe haven for when you need it. It’s provided a modern way to meet & make new friends. I think this is really important as loneliness is a real issue in our current times. The gestures of kindness are amazing. One member contacted me as she knew I was after a limited edition dress that had sold out months earlier. She didn’t want to part with the dress but she knew how much I wanted it so she wanted me to have hers! She also told me that another member had done the same to her! How beautiful is that! I can honestly say I’ve never really been attached to any clothing brand before but the leadership & values of Leina & Fleur are something truly unique & authentic & I want to be part of this community.
Your “go to” LB piece?
I am a separates girl! I have a number of pieces that I love to mix & match. Wide leg pants are the ultimate travel pants and the modern trouser suit of Greer & Tatum plus a Jordan top is so chic..
If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Only one?! Uplifting song ~ Lovely Day -Bill withers And You Never Walk Alone - is the anthem of my husband’s football team (Liverpool FC) & so really our family anthem too. This makes me cry every time I hear a crowd sing it. If you could look at your life now and the lessons you have learnt on your own journey - what would your one piece of advice be, that you would bestow upon yourself as an adolescent?
You are enough !
And last but not least, your favourite quote/s?
"Your health is your wealth" ___ "This too shall pass ."
